IT’S TIME TO TREAT THE TURTLES

A tortoise munches on vegetables from a black tray on the grassy lawn, reminiscent of serene moments you might find at Clearwater, Florida attractions. Nearby, a person uses tongs to offer it more food, with a wooden structure quietly standing in the background.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium became a household name when one of its rescued and rehabilitated dolphins, Winter, starred in the hit Warner Brother’s movies Dolphin Tale (2011) and Dolphin Tale 2 (2014). So naturally, visiting these resident mammals – of which they boast species from bottlenose to rough-toothed dolphins – is always at the top of most tourists’ lists when it comes to Clearwater area attractions. But there’s another animal here worthy of your attention: the red-footed tortoises – a non-native species to the area and many of whom are here because they were surrendered pets. In fact, the aquarium hosts daily feedings of these resident turtles, called “Tortoise Treat Time,” where visitors can get up close to feed them their favorite bites (lettuce and fruit) using chop sticks, while also learning about these charming creatures and responsible pet ownership. An especially social species, they are far from shy when it comes to a snack.

HIDDEN GEMS AROUND EVERY CORNER

Tucked away from popular Clearwater Beach Florida attractions, Philippe Park’s rich history tells an ancient story. This 122-acre park features a ceremonial mound built by the Tocobaga Native Americans, offering a fascinating glimpse into Florida’s past. As tourists flock to Pier 60’s daily sunset festivities, history buffs can escape to explore this archaeological treasure at dusk under massive oak trees draped with Spanish moss. The park offers guided historical tours, and its waterfront location provides excellent opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding. Local historians often lead special programs about the Tocobaga culture and their significance to the region, making it one of the most enlightening attractions near Clearwater.

TAKE THE TIKI BAR TO A NEW LEVEL

A small thatched-roof structure floats on a calm ocean at sunset, reminiscent of Clearwaters picturesque attractions. The sky is a gradient of orange to blue, reflecting on the water, with silhouettes of people visible under the roof.

You’ll find plenty of tiki bars across Clearwater Beach, including Opal Sands’s own Sandbar, located on a sandy stretch below the resort’s elevated pool area. But, for a more surprising spin on the thatched roof bar concept, look no further than  Cruisin‘ Tikis Clearwater. Not only do you get your own private 15-foot tiki bar for yourself and five other friends, but this bar doubles as a boat – meaning it departs from the Clearwater Beach Marina and putters around the Gulf at a max speed of five miles an hour for a unique perspective of Clearwater Beach. To really make the 90 to 120-minute tours all yours, bring your own playlist to connect to the bluetooth speaker and favorite food and drink (the outfitter provides plenty of ice, coolers, and cups).

NATURE’S BEAUTY BEYOND THE BEACH

Few know that beyond Clearwater Beach’s pristine shores, Moccasin Lake Nature Park stands out among Clearwater area attractions for offering a different kind of natural escape. This 51-acre urban oasis features winding boardwalks through cypress swamps, a butterfly garden, and even a resident bald eagle. The park’s environmental center offers hands-on exhibits and educational programs, making it an ideal spot for families looking to escape the tourist crowds. Regular wildlife demonstrations and guided nature walks provide intimate encounters with Florida’s native species. The park also hosts monthly night hikes and astronomy sessions, offering a unique perspective on Florida’s nocturnal wildlife that you won’t find at typical beach attractions.

SOPHISTICATED ENTERTAINMENT OASIS

Ruth Eckerd Hall, one of Clearwater’s premier attractions, offers a stunning nighttime view as it glows with purple lights. The buildings distinctive circular architecture stands out against the dark sky, with a crescent moon above and people gathering outside the entrance.

In contrast to the lively atmosphere of beachfront attractions, Ruth Eckerd Hall presents a refined entertainment experience among Clearwater area attractions. This acoustically perfect venue hosts everything from symphony performances to contemporary artists, proving there’s more to the local culture scene than seaside entertainment. The hall’s intimate setting ensures every seat offers excellent views, while its educational programs introduce young audiences to the performing arts through workshops and special performances.

A TASTE OF LOCAL INNOVATION

Frenchy’s various restaurant locations may dominate the beachfront dining scene, but Aspirations Winery emerged as a sophisticated alternative among Clearwater area attractions. This family-owned micro-winery, located just minutes from the beach, produces unique Florida-inspired wines, including tropical fruit varieties you won’t find elsewhere. Their intimate tasting experiences include behind-the-scenes tours of the winemaking process, food pairings with local artisanal cheeses, and seasonal wine-blending workshops. It’s become one of the most distinctive attractions near Clearwater for both locals and visitors seeking a break from traditional beach activities.

HOT DOGS FIND A SURPRISING HOME

You might not think of a hot dog as the ultimate accompaniment to a painstakingly crafted cocktail, but Clearwater Beach locals beg to differ. Because that’s precisely the menu at Reefers Social Club, where gourmet hot dogs meet expertly mixed drinks in a laid-back, yet stylish atmosphere. Here’s a rundown on a few of the favorites: The Gulf Coast, featuring house-made pico de gallo, avocado, and nacho cheese; The Carolina, covered in meat sauce, chopped onions, coleslaw, and Carolina barbeque sauce; and The Mac N Cheese, with nacho cheese, shredded cheddar, and – you guessed it – gooey macaroni and cheese. And these aren’t just your basic ballpark dogs and buns. Pick your choice of all-beef, turkey, or veggie dogs and brioche, poppy seed, or pretzel buns.
