Design in Detail: The Capitana Key West

As one of the newest members of the Opal Collection family, The Capitana Key West has been designed with island time in mind. Beachy elements reflect the hotel’s location while honoring the famous Spanish shipwrecks scattered around the Florida Keys. Experience this seaside escape for yourself through the lens of style and design while learning more about what guests can expect while retreating to one of the Keys’ latest lodging options.

The Theme: Island Vibes from Sea to Shore

Outside of this sleek and modern sanctuary, you’re greeted with fluttering palm fronds, lush vegetation, and unfiltered bay views. The Capitana is nestled in its tropical, Florida Keys location overlooking the bay, making this vacation destination a secret oasis for you to truly unwind in. This boutique hotel contains two-bedroom private cottages in addition to their luxurious rooms and suites, which all come with fully furnished balconies that make guests feel like the captain of their own ship… or should we say trip?

Upon Arrival

The Capitana’s name is derived from the famous shipwreck of Spain’s 1733 Armada, known as “La Capitana”, and walking into this casual, chic space, you’ll understand why. Large glass pendant lights hang overhead from nautical knotted ropes. The patterned blue, aqua, and sand-colored floor tiles resemble the fluid movements of the shoreline and will leave you wondering if you’re already stumbled upon the hotel’s own private beach. Submerge yourself into the mesmerizing underwater worlds seen in the two custom aquatic murals painted by South Florida artist, K.C. Scott. Guests can experience his work both inside of the hotel’s lobby and on the outside of the building. Discover buried treasures doting the walls and ceiling of the lobby: antique brass lanterns, refurbished driftwood fixtures, aquatic-themed artwork, and wavy wood beams add to the out-at-sea-inspired design.

Key Design Elements

The property’s cottages, rooms, and suites incorporate sleek ship-lapped walls, glossy sea glass colored tiles, crisp white linens, and ample natural light that give guests a feeling of being tucked away in their own private ship. Seashell prints and photos of minimalistic beach scenes line the walls of each room and suite to bring the coastal elements inside. The lively history of the hotel’s main inspiration, “La Capitana” is upheld in small details, like the colorful maps printed on side tables in guest rooms. The open-air concept is seen throughout every space at The Capitana, guiding guests to follow the natural rhythms of the sand and the sea from dawn to dusk.

Second Nature

Spend a day or an afternoon reclining by the bay in one of the hotel’s cozy shaded hammocks or find a spot in the sun in a lounge chair by the pool with a cocktail in hand. Just steps away from the main hotel, this secluded Key West beach is the ideal place to be shipwrecked for a couple of hours, or a couple of days if R&R is what you’re after.

Those lucky enough to stay at this Key West gem get to experience all that the area has to offer, some just steps away. There’s no shortage of activities and attractions in Key West. The only hard part is deciding which to put at the top of your itinerary, and of course, leaving your own slice of paradise, even if just for a few hours.
