Ways to Keep Your Workouts Going in Opal Destinations

Just because you’re planning a vacation doesn’t mean you’re also planning a vacation from your fitness routine. And sure, you could get your pump on at the hotel gym. But why not break outside the box a bit and turn your vacation workout into an active way to see the destination? We’ve done the digging to help keep your routine in check.

The Ultimate Backyard

[Rockport, ME]

Located between the Samoset Resort and the main road to the property is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream playground. Known as the Ultimate Backyard, this rolling lawn is packed with a plethora of active offerings, including a basketball court, a nine-hole disc golf course, multiple tennis courts, pickle ball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, badminton, and even a playground for the little ones. Plus, it’s all located within sight of Penobscot Bay and the Rockland Breakwater – and no gym in the world can beat that amazing vista.

The Beehive Trail

[Bar Harbor, ME]

Iron rungs, bridges, and handrails – oh my. These are some of the elements you will find yourself scrambling up and over during a hike up Acadia’s moderate-to-difficult Beehive Trail, located right off Acadia’s Park Loop Road, just five miles from West Street Hotel and Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina. While a short trail at roughly 1.3 miles in length, it’s a very steep route that will get your heart pumping as you travel up the sharp south face of the 520-foot peak. Your reward once reaching the top? The amazing views looking out over Sand Beach, Great Head, and the surrounding area.

Standup Paddleboarding

[Bolton Landing, NY]

An obvious way to see Lake George is to do so by boat. But when you opt to standup paddleboard your way around this body of water, you’re also getting an amazing core workout. Lake George Kayak Co. offers rentals and lessons and features their own launch on Green Island, right next door to The Sagamore Resort, so you don’t need to worry about traveling too far or having to transport your board. Plus, the waters are clear and calm as they are located in a no-wake zone, ideal for first timers. Those with more experience can head out farther into the lake’s Northwest Bay, break at the state boat dock at the tip of Tongue Mountain, and embark on a trip into The Narrows, a small grouping of islands east of Tongue Mountain.

Beach Yoga

[Naples, FL]

If you’re an avid yogi, no need to go scouting for a local studio and forking over a drop-in fee. Edgewater Beach Hotel offers a one-hour complimentary yoga class every Saturday at 9 a.m. (as well as private sessions upon request) right outside your guestroom door on the resort’s own private section of professionally managed white sand. All experience levels are welcome to stretch themselves physically, spiritually, and mentally to the sound of waves rolling in from the Gulf.

Mind & Motion Studio

[Longboat Key, FL]

In addition to the resort’s fitness facility, guests at The Resort at Longboat Key Club can visit the 2,500-square-foot Mind & Motion Studio, which is designed around the idea that you should leave feeling better not only physically, but mentally too. The diverse mix of classes – including yoga, Pilates, and spinning – is friendly to exercisers of all experience levels, though we’ll warn you: The gorgeous views afforded by the floor-to-ceiling windows mean that you may be distracted mid-class. The Meditation Facility, located within the studio, is the perfect place to wind down your workout peacefully.

Florida Botanical Gardens

[Clearwater Beach, FL]

Yes, there’s an excellent fitness center at Sandpearl Resort, but if you want something a bit more leisurely, venture off-property for your workout. Only a 15-minute drive from the resort, the Florida Botanical Gardens provides a perfect place to walk and enjoy some beautiful Floridian scenery – and at 180 acres, there’s plenty to see.

Delray Beach Running Club

[Delray Beach, FL]

Located three miles north of Delray Sands Resort on Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach Running Company, a running apparel store, holds free running groups every Tuesday morning (5:30 a.m.), Thursday afternoon (6:30 p.m.), and Saturday morning (6 a.m.). Open to anyone and all abilities, the up-to-six-mile routes depart from the store and travel through the scenic downtown and beside the beach. Plus, a special Tap It on the Ave pub run is offered the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and ends with beer and cocktails on the world-famous Atlantic Avenue.
