Delray Beach may be best known for its award-winning stretch of sand, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever venture west of the water. That’s because, located just a short 25-minute drive from the ocean on the far edge of Delray, you’ll find a hidden gem unlike anything in Florida – and maybe the U.S. for that matter. Between its 16 acres of Zen-like gardens, impressive museum, and authentic cuisine, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is a little slice of Japan in South Florida that begs to be explored.
OVERVIEW OF MORIKAMI MUSEUM: A BRIEF HISTORY
The Morikami Museum opened in 1977, but its origins date back much earlier. The Delray Beach area has a unique historical connection to early Japanese immigrants. In the early 1900s, a group of Japanese farmers settled in what became known as the Yamato Colony, located in the Boca Raton and Delray Beach areas. They aimed to establish a farming community. Though the colony eventually disbanded, George Morikami, one of the last remaining settlers, donated the land to Palm Beach County with the vision of creating a museum that would preserve and promote Japanese culture. Today, the museum continues to honor his legacy, offering a space for visitors to learn about Japanese art, culture, and traditions through rotating exhibits and educational programs.
INSIDE MORIKAMI: THE ESSENCE OF JAPANESE TRADITIONS
Step inside Morikami, and you’re immediately immersed in a world that celebrates the art and cultural heritage of Japan. Whether you’re strolling through one of the museum’s galleries, gardens, or participating in a hands-on workshop, Morikami offers something for everyone.
Exhibits: Showcasing Japan’s Rich Cultural Heritage
The museum regularly features rotating exhibits that highlight the beauty and intricacy of Japanese art forms. From historical artifacts to contemporary installations, the exhibits change throughout the year, giving visitors a chance to see something new with every visit. Traditional Japanese arts such as sumi-e ink painting and ceramics are often on display, providing a glimpse into Japan’s artistic heritage.
The Gardens: A Tranquil Walk through Japan’s Landscaping Tradition
The Morikami Japanese Gardens are a key highlight of any visit, offering 16 acres of stunning landscapes inspired by Japan’s greatest garden designs. Designer Hoichi Kurisu constructed each in the spirit of the masters. The gardens are divided into six distinct areas, each representing a different period in Japanese gardening history. Visitors can stroll along winding paths, through bamboo groves, past koi ponds, and over stone bridges, all while taking in the peaceful ambiance of these carefully curated spaces.
The Tea House: Experiencing the Japanese Tea Ceremony
The tea house at Morikami provides an authentic glimpse into the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. This cultural experience, also known as Chanoyu, is one of the museum’s most beloved features. The tea house is set within the gardens, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic beauty while learning about the spiritual and cultural significance of the tea ceremony. On select Saturdays, visitors are invited to observe the peace and quietude of this traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Morikami also offers tea ceremony classes and workshops.
