Delray Beach may be best known for its award-winning stretch of sand, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever venture west of the water. That’s because, located just a short 25-minute drive from the ocean on the far edge of Delray, you’ll find a hidden gem unlike anything in Florida – and maybe the U.S. for that matter. Between its 16 acres of Zen-like gardens, impressive museum, and authentic cuisine, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is a little slice of Japan in South Florida that begs to be explored.

OVERVIEW OF MORIKAMI MUSEUM: A BRIEF HISTORY

The Morikami Museum opened in 1977, but its origins date back much earlier. The Delray Beach area has a unique historical connection to early Japanese immigrants. In the early 1900s, a group of Japanese farmers settled in what became known as the Yamato Colony, located in the Boca Raton and Delray Beach areas. They aimed to establish a farming community. Though the colony eventually disbanded, George Morikami, one of the last remaining settlers, donated the land to Palm Beach County with the vision of creating a museum that would preserve and promote Japanese culture. Today, the museum continues to honor his legacy, offering a space for visitors to learn about Japanese art, culture, and traditions through rotating exhibits and educational programs.
