Stroll along the historic brick sidewalks and discover an array of unique boutiques, from locally made artisan goods at Market Square to handcrafted jewelry at Pickwick’s Mercantile. If you’re a fan of coastal décor, head to Tugboat Alley, a nautically themed shop brimming with maritime-inspired gifts and apparel so that you can bring a taste of Portsmouth home with you.

Portsmouth boasts a vibrant dining scene with a variety of different cuisine options. Check out Wentworth By the Sea’s on-site restaurant, SALT Kitchen & Bar for creatively crafted regional favorites that highlight fresh, local ingredients. If you want to head off property, make sure to try out The Friendly Toast, an all-day brunch and bar with bright colors and funky design.

Look no further for entertainment than downtown Portsmouth, which houses the Seacoast Repertory Theatre and Portsmouth Music Hall, both offering a rich variety of live performances year-round. For families, the Seacoast Science Center provides hands-on exhibits about the region’s natural environment, while the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is perfect for younger visitors, offering engaging exhibits and activities.

If you’re up for a scenic drive, Ski Bradford and Gunstock Mountain Resort are both favorite winter destinations. Gunstock stands out with its stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and a wide range of trails for skiers of all levels. Ski Bradford is known for its excellent ski school and its variety of terrain. They also offer a terrain park for freestyle enthusiasts and a cozy lodge to warm up in between runs.

If the weather’s not cooperating while you’re perusing downtown Portsmouth, warm up and create your own custom candle at Sea Love, a charming candle-making bar with over 100 scents to select from. The experience takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and while your candle cools (approximately 2 to 2.5 hours), you can explore the boutique’s seacoast-inspired home and personal care products, or grab a bite to eat downtown. Want cocktails with your candle-making? Sea Love is a BYOB establishment, so feel free to bring your favorite beverage to enjoy during the session.

Embrace the charm of a classic New England winter with ice skating at Strawberry Banke Museum. The outdoor Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond offers a picturesque setting surrounded by historic buildings that transport you back in time. Whether you’re gliding under the twinkling lights during an evening skate or enjoying a crisp afternoon on the ice, it’s a magical experience for skaters of all ages and skill levels. Skate rentals and lessons are available, making it easy to join in the fun.

Wentworth by the Sea Country Club’s 18-hole championship golf course is open to guests of the hotel. The more than century-old club has been painstakingly preserved, and the Scottish-style links offer breathtaking ocean views. The course combines scenic views of the coastline with a challenging layout, featuring meticulously maintained fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and rolling greens.

Avid sailors can arrive at the resort via boat to Safe Harbor, the private marina operated steps from our resort. With 170 slips accommodating vessels up to 200 feet, the marina is equipped with first-class amenities, including full-service docking, fueling stations, and concierge services. Leisure charters and fly-fishing excursions are also available to book through the marina.

Nature trails abound in the region surrounding Portsmouth. Odiorne Point State Park is a favorite for its scenic trails weaving through forests, salt marshes, and rocky shorelines. Along the way, you’ll find remnants of old military bunkers and breathtaking views of the Atlantic. Fort Foster is another one suitable for all levels of hikers, with easy, family-friendly trails and access to picnic areas, historic fortifications, and sandy beaches. 

A variety of outfitters, such as Seven Rivers Paddling, offer guided kayak and stand up paddleboard tours of the unique waters surrounding Portsmouth. Paddle through scenic Piscataqua River and the backwaters of Great Bay, with knowledgeable guides sharing insights on the area’s unique natural beauty. Wentworth by the Sea’s private marina provides easy access to the ocean and water activities. Paddleboarding is a favorite pasttime for sunny days, with stand-up paddleboard tours available through local outfitters. Glide along the calm waters, taking in the scenic views of the coastline and surrounding natural beauty.
